Protect our storm system and waterways.
The Town of Comox storm system manages rainfall through storm lines, mains, ponds, and outfalls.
Rainwater that doesn’t soak into the ground flows into storm drains (catch basins), carrying residues from products. Stormwater is not treated, so it flows straight into local waterways where any product residue can harm fish habitats and marine environments.

Stormwater is not treated; it flows directly into creeks, ponds, and the ocean.
Rainfall that does not soak into the ground flows as runoff into storm drains (catch basins), carrying any residue with it. Common sources of product runoff include:
- Washing or treating a building, roof, window, driveway, or vehicle
- Lawn fertilizing or pesticides
- Vehicles leaking fluids
Be sure to:
- Use eco-friendly products
- Contain product runoff
- Follow safe product disposal
The Town does not endorse any specific cleaning or treatment products.

Roof cleaning and moss treatment products can runoff your property and enter storm drains - this water is not treated — it empties directly into local waterways.
The Town does not endorse any specific cleaning or treatment products.
Recommended cleaning methods are:
- Asphalt, cedar, and untreated wood shingles: Clean using plain water or water with a non-hazardous cleaning solution.
- Treated wood shingles: Dry wash only, as these materials contain toxic preservatives.
LEAVES
- Clearing leaves from drains fronting your property will help prevent local flooding. View the Storm Mains and Catch Basins map.
- Please do not put leaves onto the road , as this creates a hazard, and our limited staff and equipment do not allow for prompt removal. This action is also in contravention of Bylaw 1652.
SNOW & ICE
- Clearing snow and ice from drains fronting your property will help drain melting snow and any rainfall groundwater. View the Storm Mains and Catch Basins map.
- Please do not shovel snow onto the road , as this creates a hazard, and our limited staff and equipment do not allow for prompt removal.
- View the Winter Operations webpage which outlines the snow and ice control measures to be taken by Town staff, residents and business owners in an effort to keep properties and travel as safe as possible.
Thank you for your assistance!
