It is in our best interest to participating fully in the organics and recycling programs in order to:
- create the least negative impact on the environment
- reduce the amount of waste being sent to the landfill in order to extend its lifespan which defers major capital expenditures.
The Town of Comox has partnered with the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) who sustainably manages organics (food and yard waste) for residents who receive municipal collection services. CSWM has an Organic Matter Recycling Regulation Permit with the Province - please click here to learn more. They set the guidelines for cart liners and what is acceptable as organics cart content.
Sending organics to the landfill takes up valuable space and creates harmful greenhouse gases. By diverting organics and transforming it into nutrient rich compost, we can extend the life of the landfill as well as create compost for agriculture and landscaping. IMPORTANT TIP:
Please do not put garbage, pet waste and litter into your Organics cart - the cart will not be collected. If an Organics truck load is contaminated, the entire load must be diverted to the landfill, which is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve.
