The Town of Comox's new Urban Forest Management Strategy, which was adopted by Council in 2026, articulates a 30-year vision and goals for the management of our urban forest.
Vision and Goals
Comox’s urban forest is a connected system of treed yards, natural areas, parks, trails, and open spaces that foster healthy and active living. Our urban forest is diverse, equitable, and resilient to the impacts of climate change. Through strong community stewardship, tree protection, and adaptive management, the urban forest and its benefits are safeguarded for the community, ensuring a green future for generations to come.
- Goal 1 - Grow Comox's urban forest to meet social and ecological needs.
- Goal 2 - Protect Comox’s urban forest to prevent avoidable loss of ecosystem services.
- Goal 3. Engage Comox’s community to strengthen urban forest stewardship.
- Goal 4. Sustain Comox’s urban forest as an organizational priority to secure its future.
The Urban Forest in Comox
An urban forest includes all public- and privately owned trees and the supporting vegetation in the Town of Comox. It includes all the individual trees and groups of trees located in natural areas, parks, backyards, on streets, and in commercial and industrial zones. It also includes other elements such as plants, water, soil, microorganisms, and wildlife. All these elements, the people, and the built environment can have a significant impact on the health of the urban forest.
What is the role of the urban forest?
What can you do?
By protecting trees on your property, you can help us grow the Town's urban forest. Here are ways you can help:
- During hot and dry weather, assist by watering trees.
- Look for opportunities to introduce new trees. Learn more about the benefits of urban trees by visiting the Tree Canada's website.
