Last week, Mayor and Council approved the 2022- 2026 Strategic Plan, an integral step in defining areas of focus that will be a foundation throughout their four-year term serving the community.
Over the last year, Council worked closely together to identify areas that will guide their work. Five overarching themes emerged:
- Organizational Excellence – through a focus on fiscal planning for infrastructure additions and replacement, on staff retention, improving internal processes and customer service to the public
- Community Connection and Wellness – supporting and enhancing the Town through recreation, parks, arts and culture, while maintaining public safety
- Economic Health – ensuring the vitality of the downtown, balancing vibrancy and stability
- Good Governance – making strong decisions by utilizing community participation, developing relationships, and collaboration
- Balanced Community Planning – a focus on strategic growth, attainable housing, and development with appropriate community benefits
The top projects highlighted in the plan include the design and construction of a new pump track to enhance youth recreation, a focus on parks and urban planning, completing a “Downtown Action Plan”, including Comox Marina, and the completion of a “Climate Change Risk Assessment”.
“The work highlighted in our new plan is ambitious yet balanced to recognize the challenges with a growing community,” said Comox Mayor, Nicole Minions. “We are excited to work through the plan, evaluate the progress, and enhance the livability of our Town. Both Council and senior leadership were involved in getting to our adoption last week. We are all proud of the synergy and the process that took place in developing the plan.”
Council also identified a new vision, which commits to “maintaining and enhancing the quality of life for all residents, businesses, and visitors through investment in active transportation, infrastructure, parks, recreation, arts and culture. We aim to provide a vibrant, safe, sustainable environment and community with disciplined urban planning and communications.”
Council will review the Strategic Plan during their regularly scheduled monthly Strategic Planning Committee meetings as well as through a highlight report in the Town’s Annual Report publication. The Strategic Plan will also guide decision-making as Council moves forward with a review and deliberations on the draft 2024 financial plan in the upcoming months.
