*Sending wishes and congratulations was the Town's funding partner, the Government of Canada through Pacific Economic Development.
On Thursday, September 7, 2023, Ronna-Rae Leonard, MLA for Courtenay-Comox, Brodie Guy, Island Coastal Economic Trust CEO, Nicole Minions, Comox Mayor and members of Town Council officially opened the marine services building at a ribbon-cutting event.
The new building was funded by the Government of Canada through PacifiCan’s Canada Community Revitalization Fund, the Province of British Columbia through their Community Economic Recovery Infrastructure Program, and Island Coastal Economic Trust’s Capital and Innovation Program. The marine services building addressed the lack of retail space and community services at the Comox Marina by providing three retail spaces, public barrier-free washrooms, and a visitor information kiosk. This increased capacity supports tourism-related businesses, creates jobs, and provides long-term economic growth for the region.
Quotes:
“Shared public spaces are the heart of communities across Canada. They bring people together, support businesses, and stimulate local economies. Investing in a new marine services building will help attract locals and visitors alike to the beautiful community of Comox, and create a vibrant hub that will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
- The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada
“Investments in tourism infrastructure projects like the Town of Comox’s new marine services building are good for visitors, good for communities and good for the economy. The tourism investments we’ve made in regions throughout the province are creating a more vibrant British Columbia for everyone.”
- Lana Popham, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport
“Comox Marina is in the heart of the community where people of all ages gather year-round — and yet it’s also a vital transportation hub for the Comox Valley. We’re grateful to partner with the Town on this important investment that is already strengthening local businesses, entrepreneurs and community organizations.”
- Brodie Guy, CEO, Island Coastal Economic Trust
“The Town of Comox is proud to officially open this building that will support and build capacity for the marine tourism industry, create jobs and improve economic resilience. Thanks to our funding partners and the hard-working project development team, the investment into this facility will ensure this seaside gathering place continues to energize locals and visitors to play outdoors and enjoy activity, entertainment and adventure.”
