The Town of Comox, in partnership with the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia (RFABC), is hosting the Building Service Worker (BSW) level 1 course on March 8 and 9, 2025, at the Comox Community Centre. This training program provides an essential stepping stone for individuals looking to enter the custodial field, with additional incentives offered to encourage local participation.
The RFABC’s BSW level 1 course introduces the fundamentals of custodial knowledge and skills and prepares participants for employment in community centres, school boards, colleges, and other institutions. Graduates who successfully complete the written and skills demonstration exams will earn a BSW level 1 certificate, a qualification valued by potential employers.
Incentives for Participants:
The Town recognizes the challenges of recruiting qualified custodial staff and is offering unique opportunities for course participants:
- Interview Opportunities: Participants who demonstrate enthusiasm and aptitude during the course will be offered an interview for a casual custodian position with the Town of Comox.
- Reimbursement Program: Those hired within six months of completing the course and who work at least 100 hours within their first year of employment will be reimbursed for 25% of the course cost.
“We’re in need of custodial staff, but many applicants who apply do not have the foundational BSW certification,” said Comox’s Recreation Director, Ted Hagmeier. “By hosting this course locally and offering incentives, we’re making it easier for people to get the training they need to join our team. It is a win-win for the Town and for participants looking to secure employment.”
The RFABC recognizes this training a valuable launchpad for anyone wanting to work in community spaces. “The BSW level 1 course is your ticket to a range of opportunities in recreation facilities and more,” said RFABC’s Executive Director, Dwayne Kalynchuk. “We’re excited to team up with the Town of Comox to make this course easy to access and help people build the skills they need to land jobs close to home.”
The BSW level 1 course runs 8:30 – 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, 2025, at the cost of $450 per person. Register in person at the Comox Community Centre (1855 Noel Avenue), by phone at 250-339-2255 or online at comox.ca/register (direct link to course https://bit.ly/3CbT3Z0). Early registration is encouraged as space is limited.
