The Town of Comox is pleased to share progress on the Comox Avenue/Glacier View Roundabout Totem Pole, which is being crafted by local artist Karver Everson, a Pentlatch, K'ómoks band member and Kwakwaka'wakw artist and carver.
Recent progress photos offer a glimpse into the craftsmanship and attention to detail that will bring this significant cultural landmark to life ahead of its planned unveiling this fall. The project was first announced in February when Karver was selected through an Expressions of Interest process to create the pole for the roundabout.
"The concept for the Iwus (On Top) Glacier View roundabout pole is deeply rooted in the history and culture of the Pentlatch and K'ómoks peoples," said Karver Everson. "The location, historically known as Iwus, meaning 'on top,' served as a lookout point for potential intruders arriving by boat and canoe. There was once a fort and fortifications at the top of the hill overlooking the water, a strategic site used to observe and respond to those arriving by canoe, whether friend or foe. Through this pole, I aim to revitalize that history and share its cultural significance with the broader community."
The design will feature a Suwa'lqum (Thunderbird), an important crest among the Pentlatch people, positioned above a Guardian Figure. Together, they symbolize protection, vigilance, and the site's historical role as a place of observation and welcome. The Guardian Figure will reference the meaning of Pentlatch, often translated as "full-bellied," representing wealth, nobility, and status, while a raised hand shading the eyes symbolizes the lookout's watchful role.
The reverse side of the pole will incorporate carvings that tell additional stories connected to the specific location and local culture. Fish, defensive elements, a caller from the water, and a sun motif represent traditional fishing practices, the former fortifications on the hill, community interactions, and renewal.
"As this impressive work continues to take shape, we're excited to share its progress with the community," said Comox Mayor Nicole Minions. "The Glacier View Totem Pole will be a lasting and meaningful welcome to Comox, honouring the history, teachings, and artistic traditions of the Pentlatch and K'ómoks peoples and inviting reflection, learning, and cultural understanding for generations to come.”
The completed pole is expected to be installed later this fall, followed by a community celebration and official unveiling.
