The d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre Association invites the community to join in celebrating a remarkable milestone—the Centre’s 50th anniversary. The celebration will take place on Saturday, July 18, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. near the gazebo closest to the Centre in Comox Marina Park.
This family-friendly event will feature live music by “The Optimist” with additional entertainment, a beer garden, hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks for sale, and a kids’ zone complete with face painting and games, bringing all generations together in a space that has been part of Comox’s history for the last five decades.
In the early 1970s, local seniors recognized a need for a dedicated gathering space and began organizing activities out of various facilities. Their vision led to the formation of a committee, successful grant applications, and the support of the Rotary Club of Comox, which ultimately moved construction forward at its permanent location at 1801 Beaufort Avenue in 1976.
The land was generously donated by Sidney W.B. d’Esterre, known locally as “Dusty”, a community-minded benefactor whose legacy helped shape the revitalization of the waterfront and park space.
“Fifty years ago, a group of dedicated people came together with a vision to create a place where seniors could connect, stay active and be part of a growing community,” said Comox Mayor Nicole Minions. “Today, that vision continues to thrive and is an essential part of this community. We’re very proud to celebrate this milestone together and the countless volunteers who give back to the Centre and the association.”
“From the very beginning, the d’Esterre Seniors’ Centre has been built on the dedication, creativity, and generosity of its members,” said President of the Association, Myrna Holman. “As we celebrate 50 years, we honour those who laid the foundation and everyone who has helped make this a welcoming place for friendship, learning, and shared memories. We invite the entire community, former members, current members, and those who will one day walk through our doors—to join us in celebrating this special milestone.”
Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend this free event and celebrate this milestone. For more information, visit comoxseniors.ca or follow along on dÉsterre Seniors' Centre Facebook page.
