As Bat Week 2025 (Oct. 24 - 31) approaches, the Town of Comox is calling on local pet owners to help raise awareness about the importance of bats by dressing their dogs, cats, or other furry companions in bat-inspired costumes. The “Batty Pets” Costume Campaign invites households across the community to submit photos of their pets dressed up “bat-like” to show support for bat conservation, habitat protection, and public education.

What is Bat Week?
Bat Week is an international, annual event dedicated to celebrating bats and increasing awareness of their vital role in ecosystems. Bats consume huge numbers of insects, assist in pollination, and spread seeds that contribute to forests and biodiversity. At the same time, bats are under threat from habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change. The official site explains more about why bats are so important.

About the “Batty Pets” Costume Campaign

  • Goal: To engage our community in a friendly, fun way to raise awareness about bats and promote bat conservation.
  • How it works: Pet owners can dress up their pets in bat-themed costumes (for example, bat wings, masks, capes, or creative “bat-like” attire) and submit a photo.
  • Submission period: October 1 – October 31
  • Where to send photos: Email photos to town@comox.ca or tag on Instagram at #comoxbattypets
  • What participants get: a public display of their submission, the opportunity to win random draw prizes, and social media posting.
  • Showcasing: Selected “bat-pet” photos will be featured during Bat Week to highlight how we can all support our nocturnal neighbours.

Why Bats Matter
Bats are often underappreciated yet essential to environmental health. They help control insect populations, pollinate many plants, and aid in new vegetation growth. Yet many species are declining due to human impacts. Raising awareness—through community engagement like this project—can help reduce threats and improve conditions for bats.

How Community Members Can Help Beyond the Costume Campaign

  • Learn more about local bat species and how to protect roosting sites.
  • Limit pesticide use and protect natural habitats.
  • Support bat-friendly lighting and avoid disturbing bat roosts.
  • Share bat facts and resources with friends, family, and neighbours.
